The Olive Branch of Hope(TOBOH) will welcome hundreds of supporters on Sunday April 8th to their Annual Fundraising Gala. For the past 17 years they have been working to support women and their families affected with breast cancer. Please join and learn more about our organization, how we help and our plans to reach out to women in the Caribbean. “We Believe” Key Note Speaker – Dr. Lisa Newman

Dr. Newman is a surgical oncologist, and effective December 1, 2015 she became Director of the Breast Oncology Program for the multi-hospital Henry Ford Health System in metropolitan Detroit Michigan. She also serves as Founding Medical Director for the newly-created HFHS International Center for the Study of Breast Cancer Subtypes. Prior to being recruited to HFHS, Dr. Newman was Professor of Surgery and Director of the Breast Care Center for the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she also served as Program Director for the Breast Fellowship since 2002. She maintains a University of Michigan affiliation, as Professor of Health Management and Policy with the School of Public Health. Dr. Newman holds a Masters Degree in Public Health from Harvard University, and she also obtained her undergraduate education at Harvard University with a major in chemistry. She attended medical school and completed her general surgery residency training at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn. Dr. Newman was recruited to remain at Downstate following completion of her postgraduate training, and served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery with this program for several years. She completed her fellowship in surgical oncology at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Prior to assuming her current position at the University of Michigan, Dr. Newman served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas with a full-time commitment to research and clinical practice in the Surgical Breast Section, and she continues to hold a position as Adjunct Professor of Surgery with M.D. Anderson. She also served previously as Associate Director for the Walt Breast Center at Wayne State University for two years. Dr. Newman was recently recruited to join the Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) and effective December 1, 2015 she was named Director of the Breast Oncology Program for the multiple hospitals within HFHS; she also serves as founding Medical Director for the newly-created HFHS International Center for the Study of Breast Cancer Subtypes.

Dr. Newman’s primary research has focused on ethnicity-related variation in breast cancer risk and outcome, the evaluation and management of high-risk patients; broadened applications for neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and special surgical techniques such as the skin-sparing mastectomy and lymphatic mapping/sentinel lymph node biopsy. Her extensive research related to disparities in breast cancer risk and outcome has been published in numerous peer-reviewed medical journals and was featured in CNN’s documentary “Black in America 2”. She was also the featured breast cancer medical expert for NBC’s “Today Show” in October 2014 as well on CBS Nightly News in April 2015. She maintains a very active community service record, and currently serves as Chief National Medical Advisor for the Sisters Network, Inc., a national African American breast cancer survivors support organization. She currently oversees an international breast cancer research and training program involving the University of Michigan, the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan, the Komfo Anoyke Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana, the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana, and the St. Paul’s Millennium Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This program has focused in the study of triple negative breast cancer in women with African ancestry. Her work has been acknowledged via several awards, such as the 2012 Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation Hero Award; and the 2010 National Medical Association Woman in Medicine Award. She was named one the ten “Michiganders of the Year” for 2011 by the Detroit News one of “Oprah’s Angels” for breast cancer work by Oprah magazine. She has received the University of Michigan 2012 Community Service Award; the 2013 Sarah Goddard Power Award for Advancement of Women in Academic Medicine; and the 2015 Harold Johnson Diversity Award. Most recently, Dr. Newman was awarded the coveted title of Komen Scholar, for its maximum three-year term which she will serve from 2016-2019.

Dr. Newman also held an appointment to the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Breast cancer in Young Women, and she chaired its work-group on breast health messages for the general population; she also served on the NIH’s Clinical Trials Advisory Committee. Dr. Newman has held leadership positions in the most prominent of oncologic academic and advocacy organizations: for the Society of Surgical Oncology she served on the Executive Council and chaired the Disparities Committee; for the American Society of Clinical Oncology she has chaired the Health Disparities Advisory Group and the Health Services Committee; for the American Cancer Society she has served on the National Assembly, the Board of Directors for the Great Lakes Division and is a member of its national committees on Incidence and Mortality as well as Breast Cancer. Dr. Newman has also served on the Executive Council for the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, and she chaired its Special Populations Committee. Dr. Newman served as Editor of the Disparities Section for the prestigious journal Cancer, and she has served as Section Editor for the Breast Section of Annals of Surgical Oncology, the Official journal of the Society of Surgical Oncology. She has also served on the Editorial Boards for numerous other leading academic journals such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology; CA-A Cancer Journal for Clinicians; and Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.
